Munster is an upper middle class town located in the North Township, Lake County, in Northwest Indiana in the United States. This bedroom community lies in the Chicago metropolitan area, approximately 30 miles (48 km) southeast of the Chicago Loop, and is surrounded by Hammond to the north, Highland to the east, Dyer and Schererville to the south, and Lansing and Lynwood directly west of the Illinois border
In it's over 100th year since incorporation, the Town of Munster boasts a wealth of cultural and public amenities enjoyed by its 24,000 residents. This community has grown gradually and totals approximately 9,000 homes. Conveniently located on the south shores of Lake Michigan the distinctive community of Munster offers the families and businesses that call it home all the advantages of life in the big city with a wide selection of shopping, cultural events, and outstanding accessibility - just 26 miles south of Chicago - but none of the headaches and disadvantages that typically come with life in larger towns.
The history of the Town is connected to the growth of the railroad. Settlers arriving in the 1850s arrived by rail; these early residents of the area raised crops and provided dairy products to the profitable Chicago markets. Like many immigrants, the family name of Jacob Monster had been anglicized to Munster. Jacob Munster opened a General Store on Ridge Road in 1870 that provided groceries, hardware, dry goods, and an oak desk that was the area's first U.S. Post Office. In 1907, the community distinguished one of its first residents by forming a municipality, the Town of Munster.
Munster's location near major highways, airports and rail lines has helped the town become a desirable center for business of all sorts. Lower tax rates and real estate have created an appeal to industrial parks and smaller office complexes. This prosperity has given residents a booming local economy and a wide selection of various goods. Many national and regional organizations are proud to call Munster home such as Community Hospital, Pepsi, General Electric Appliance Distribution Center, and Whole Foods. Both retail and industrial corporations enjoy the advantageous logistical location of the community in addition to the well-educated population within the immediate area. Besides the award-winning Munster schools, Munster students can commute to at least three institutions of higher learning - Purdue University Northwest, Calumet College, and Indiana University Northwest.
One of the central points of pride for the town is its consistently top-ranked education system. The elementary schools have received state recognition for meeting the highest standards of attendance, parent participation and student performance. Munster High School has been named a four-star school by the Indiana Department of Education. Students on this level benefit from over 130 courses offered and a selection of advanced placement courses, which give students a chance to earn college credit.
Attractions located within Munster's borders are the Center for Visual and Performing Arts, Edward P. Robinson Community Veterans Memorial, and the community's latest addition - Centennial Park. The area is also home to excellent public and private schools, local hospitals, and numerous churches.
Munster is a great place to live, play and work. The Town is first class in education, culture, shopping, health care, transportation, parks and recreation. Prove it for yourself; come and see us.
